Back-to-School Checklist: Helping Families Get Ready

Date: 08/03/26

The new school year is almost here. For many families, that means busy mornings and new routines. A little planning now can make things easier for everyone.

This simple checklist can help children stay healthy and ready to learn.

Start with health checkups
Now is a good time to schedule a wellness visit. If your child plays sports, they may also need a sports physical. Make sure the school has updated shot records and any health information.
You should also check your child’s vision and dental health. If they have not had an eye exam or dental visit recently, schedule one. Seeing clearly and having healthy teeth can help children do better in school.

Plan for medications and care
If your child takes medicine, make sure it is up to date. Talk to the school about how and when medicine will be given. Having a plan helps keep your child safe during the school day.

Create daily routines

Good routines can help children feel ready and less stressed. Start adjusting bedtimes before school begins so children get enough sleep.

Try to get ready the night before.
Pack backpacks, pick out clothes, and plan meals. This can make mornings easier.

Healthy food is also important.
Plan simple, balanced meals and snacks to help your child stay focused and active.

Start the year strong
Getting ready for school is not just about supplies. It is about building healthy habits and routines.

With a little preparation, families can feel ready for a great school year.
